Chase on his 2nd anniversary with Leukemia with his Dad on the track after finishing 2nd on 3/29/08

5/12/08

With a borrowed magneto from Don Weber at Cap's Coating's  Gassett Racing was ready to put their bad luck behind them.  With wife Carry and kids Chase and Makenna already in the bay area for Amercian Cancer Society's Mother's Day Couragous Kids Day at Great America, David decided to race at Madera then go straight up to the hotel after the race. Boy was that plan not going to work without a few wrinkles. The day started off well with a tricky track surface and nine 360's in the pits along with twelve 410 supermodifeds the night would have a 21 car main event. In practice the car ran good and David wheeled the car to #78's first trophy dash of the season qualifying third with a time of 13.866. During the trophy dash David was racing wheel to wheel inches away from #26 Donnie Large when the the car jumped out of gear. Lucky for David and his motor it happened in the turn and David coasted to a stop finishing last. The mixed heat race was wild and David went to the back at the start and used it as a practice session. In the main David started in the 12th position and soon found out he had a very loose car. David slipped back a few spots and was riding it out when on lap 20 all hell broke loose. While at top speed entering turn one around 100 mph  it's believed that the right front axle broke off. The steering was lost and David locked up the brakes as quick as  he could as the car slid and sparked into the turn one wall. David immediately rolled out of the car and hobbled off the track. David had a slight concussion and neck pain from the crash. The 78 car suffered major damage to the right side of the car bending or breaking all shock towers and panhard mounts. The main frame rails have not been checked yet to see if they are bent. Both right side wheels are junk along with the shocks. The broken axle probably was cracked earlier in one of the previous three incidents with the right front corner in the last four seasons and went unoticed until it broke off.The motor looks unhurt as long as something didn't break loose inside on impact.

While trying to tow the car off the track the track's tow truck broke down. Rather then unhooking the car and getting another tow truck the track decided to drag the tow truck and car off the track causing more damage to the already tore up #78 super. The car was in gear and none of the track officials/workers asked David or the crew to go take the car out of gear.

After the car was placed on the trailer by another tow track at the end of the night David's friend Jimmy Herd took him to Madera Comminity Hospital to get his neck and back x-rayed. The CT scan was negative and David was released from the hospital at 2:30am and proceded to drive the two hours to the hotel arriving at 4:30am for Mother's Day. The plan earlier in the week was to be at the hotel by midnight but a few unforeseen problems arose.

Thanks to John, Randy and Wendy for helping throughout the day. Thanks also to Jimmy Herd for staying at the hospital until the early morning. Also thank to Don Weber for the borrowed magneto.

Now the question is: Repair the car with with money and parts David and Gassett Racing do not have or call it quits being an owner/driver? David could also wait centuries for someone to ask him to drive their car?(LOL)  These questions need to be answered in the near future to see what happens with Gassett Racing.
